860,412. Turning projectiles. LAUTERBACH, W. Oct. 28, 1957 [Oct. 26, 1956], No. 33634/57. Class 83 (3). In a method of turning articles such as projectiles from bar-stock, a tool first operates to form a tail-portion of a first article and then forms a region of reduced cross-sectional area joining the tail-portion to the remaining length of bar-stock, thirdly the head-portion of a second article is formed by the tool, after which the first article is severed from the stock. Barstock 30, Fig. 2, is held in the chuck 1 of an automatic lathe and one article 40, supported by a tailstock, has already had the head-portion turned. A tool 2b starts from a point S and turns the tail-portion 40b of a projectile case along path IIa. The tool then turns a part IIb of reduced diameter, and then proceeds to a rough-shaping of the nose of a second article along path IIc. While the last operation is continuing, a further tool 7 moves in to part-off. The tool 2b meanwhile returns along the path IId, and when the parting-off is completed, reverses along path IIe to finish the nose portion of projectile 40a. Feed-motion for generating.-A control-shaft 19, Fig. 3, driven by means (not shown), in timed relation to other parts of the lathe, is provided with a face-cam 13 and an edge-cam 16. The former operates a double-ended lever 12 to reciprocate a spring-returned bar 11 secured to a rockable tool-bar 9 carrying a tool 10. A roller 17 on the other end of the tool-bar is spring-pressed into engagement with the edge-cam 16 for the transverse movements of the tool.
