456,481. Cutting-off and centre-drilling machines. MASCHINEN & BOHRGERATE FABRIK A. WIRTH & CO., KOMMANDITGES., Erkelenz, Rhineland, Germany. Dec. 17, 1935, No. 35038. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1934. [Class 83 (iii)] An automatic machine for severing the open end and centre-drilling the closed end of hollow workpieces is provided with a conveyer chain arranged to bring workpieces intermittently under the axis of the machine spindle whereupon a roller under the chain is actuated by an eccentric to bring a workpiece into alignment with the spindle. The workpieces, placed on the chain-conveyer 16, Fig. 2, at the rear of the machine, move forwardly until they reach successively the plane of the spindle axis when they are raised by an eccentrically mounted roller so that the axis of the work and machine coincide, the gripping mandrel 6, carried by the fluid-operated sliding head 2 then moves into the workpiece to grip it and revolve it. The tailstock 15 which is also fluid-operated is next retracted and automatically indexed a third of a revolution to replace the stop member by a preliminary drilling tool, a further indexing movement and feed completing the drilling of the centre-hole. During this time the fluidoperated lever tool-rest 8 completes the cutting-off of the open end of the workpiece the headstock is then moved away from the workpiece which is held against movement by the stripping member d, and the chain conveyer moves forwardly to feed in a fresh workpiece.
