Abstract
858,927. Pipe couplings. BATAAFSE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. April 30, 1959 [May 2, 1958], No. 14752/59. Class 99(1). In a coupling for conduits in which a flange 3 is provided on the coupling part 4 foi mating with a seat 2 in the part 1, the latter partly fitting over the flange 3 but being provided with an opening through which the flange 3 can be laterally inserted into or withdrawn from the seat 2, and in which a flexible packing ring 5 sealingly engages the parts 1, 4 due to the difference in pressure inside and outside the conduits, the packing 5 is provided with a V- shaped groove 10, 19 in its inner and/or outer peripheral surface, the groove 9 if provided being in communication with the atmosphere, and has a flat end surface 6 which, when the coupling is uncoupled, coincides or substantially coincides with a flat end surface 8 of the part 1, so that, when the parts are coupled together, the packing ring rests against the flat end surface 12 of the part 4. The packing ring is secured by a collar 7 in the part 1. An axially movable, spring-biased locking member 13 is mounted on the part 4 and fits around the part 1. Alternatively the locking member is mounted on the part 1.
