Abstract

858,416. X-ray tubes. ELY, R. E. V. Sept. 13, 1957 [July 16, 1956], No. 21897/56. Class 39(1). In an X-ray tube comprising a target assembly including a target 5 and a stem-like support member 7, 8 which traverses the evacuated envelope of the tube and the axis of which is disposed transversely to the axis of an electronemissive assembly, the target assembly is so arranged that it can be withdrawn from the tube and also can be moved axially and/or rotated while the tube is in operation so that various portions of the target can be usefully employed. As shown the target comprises a plurality of rings of different metals and is supported by an insulating carrier 7 and a spindle 8 having a sliding seal engagement with a sleeve 15 sealed to the envelope by means of a bush 17. The motion of the target may be step-by-step or continuous and the spindle may be screw-threaded at one end. The operating potential may be applied to the target by means of a bush-like element adapted to press against the target surface as described in Specification 858,417. Windows 11 are provided for inspection and adjustment of the target and an X-ray permeable window is associated with apertures 12. Target 5 and support members 7, 8 may be hollow so that a cooling fluid may be circulated therethrough.
