Abstract

857,248. Ball-and-socket vehicle couplings. BILLINGTON, H. E. Oct. 24, 1957, No. 33173/57. Class 103(5). A ball-and-socket coupling has a brake fluid duct 14 through the ball, and passages 31, 32 anc 33 in a thrust block 25 communicating with transverse ducts 35, 37 in the socket member The ducts 35, 37 connect with one another on the further side of the socket through a covered recess 36, and with a further duct 47 in the draw bar. Connections to the towing vehicle and trailer brake systems are made at 15 and 48. The block 25 is retained in the socket by a pin 34 and is provided with an annular member 27 sealed against the ball by means of a screw 29. In a modification the duct 47 may be replaced by a rigid external pipe, the connections to the ball socket 18 and the trailer vehicle being through flexible pipes.
