Abstract

853,688. Universal joints. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. April 1, 1958 [April 3, 1957], No. 10903/57. Class 80 (2). In a shaft coupling torque is transmitted through rubber pads 5e in shear up to a predetermined value above which it is transmitted through rubber pads 5d in compression. The shear pads 5e are bonded to blocks 5a detachably secured to a driving shaft 1 and to plates 5b held in recesses in a driven member 11 fast with the output shaft 12 by wedged shaped compression stops 5c which carry in recesses the compression pads 5d. The stops 5c are retained by screws 15, removal of which, together with axial screws 9, retaining plate 7, dowels 8 and spacers 14, permit radial removal of individual block units 5a. The shaft 1 is centred by precompressed rubber blocks 16 bonded between metal plates 16a, 16b which have grooves 16e which receive locating pins 17 and lugs 16d receive bolts 18 which compress the rubber 16 prior to assembly or dismantling.
