Abstract

546,128. Flexible couplings ; crossheads. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., LTD., and DICKINSON, G. Jan. 15, 1941, No. 582. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A flexible shaft coupling comprises annular discs 4, 9, having tongue and groove connection 9a with one another and being connected by rubber discs 3, 8, to flanges 2a, on coupling members 2, 7, fixed to the ends of shafts 1, 6. The members 2, 7. carry wear rings 5, 10. In operation the rubber rings 3, 8, are in shear. The shafts 1, 6, can be disconnected by separating the rings 4, 9, by means of bolts 11 which pass through clearance holes in the flanges 2a and rings 3, 8, and screw into the rings 4, 9. The rings 3, 8, are then compressed. Preferably the rubber rings are bonded to the parts they connect, and they may be in compression in the engaged position of the rings 4, 9. If desired one of the rings 4, 9, may be integral with the associated flange 2a one of the rubber rings being then omitted. As applied to the transmission of rectilinear motion the parts 3, 4, 8, 9, may be rectangular blocks and crosshead members may take the place of the coupling members 2, 7.
