Abstract
In a process for the continuous manufacture of polyamides at substantially atmospheric pressure, a mixture of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and a volatile aliphatic or aralyphatic diamine is introduced into a heated reaction zone in which the concentration of diamine is maintained in more than stoichiometric proportion to the dicarboxylic acid present. Part of the diamine and all of the dicarboxylic acid may be present as a salt Specified diamines and dicarboxylic acids are hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, g -methyl hexamethylene diamine, m-and-p-xylylene diamine, adipic, sebacic and azelaic acid. Up to 40% by weight of the aliphatic acid may be replaced by an aromatic acid e.g. m- or p-phthalic acid. Modifying agents and additives which may be present in the reaction mixture include acetic acid, titanium dioxide, cadmium yellow, red iron oxide, phthalocyanines and carbon black. The examples describe the preparation of polymers from (1) aqueous hexamethylene diammonium adipate containing excess hexamethylene diamine and (2) hexamethylene diammonium sebacate containing excess hexamethylene diamine.
