Abstract
Thermosetting. N-alkylol polyamides are prepared by heating in the presence of water a salt of a dicarboxylic acid and an N-alkylol diamine. Other polyamide forming reactants may be present, e.g. salts of diamines and dibasic acids, amino acids and lactams. The products are further polymerizable on heating to give insoluble products. Reactants specified are N-ethylol decamethylene diamine, N,N1-bis-(ethylol) - tetramethylene diamine, N,N1-bis-(ethylol) hexamethylene diamine, N-(propylol)-hexamethylene diamine and N,N1 - bis - (propylol) hexamethylene diamine; glutaric, adipic, methyl-adipic, pimelic and sebacic acids; tetra- and hexamethylene diamine, diaminodipropylether, aminocaproic and aminoundecylic acids, caprolactam and oenrantholactam. In examples, (1) 100 parts N.N1 - bis - (ethylol) - hexamethylene di - ammonium adipate and 5 parts of water are heated in a closed vessel for 3 hours to 200 DEG C. A viscous product is obtained which polymerizes to a dry foaming body on heating to 200 DEG C.; (2) 10 parts N.N1-bis-(ethylol)-hexamethylene diammonium adipate, 90 parts caprolactam, 4 parts hexamethylene diammonium adipate and 2.5 parts water are heated in a nitrogen atmosphere for 6 hours to 260 DEG C. A polyamide soluble in cresol is obtained which becomes insoluble on heating to 170 DEG C.; (3) 5 parts N.N1-bis-(ethylol)-hexamethylene diammonium sebacate, 60 parts hexamethylene diammonium adipate, 40 parts caprolactam and 2.5 parts of water are heated as in (3). The product is soluble in a 9 : 1 methanol/water mixture and can be cast into a film which on heating for 15 minutes to 170 DEG C. becomes insoluble. Specification 732,059 is referred to.
