Abstract
756,384. Polyamides. PERFOGIT SOC. PER AZIONI. Jan. 4, 1954 [Jan. 12, 1953], No. 175/54. Class 2 (5). In the preparation of polyamides by the polycondensation or polymerization of diamines and dicarboxylic acids or esters thereof, or of aminoacids, or of cyclic amides, the molecular weight of the product is controlled by carrying out the process in the presence of butyrolactone. Polyamides specified are polymers of omegaaminoundecanoic acid, caprolactam or hexamethylene diamine adipate. It is preferred to operate under such conditions that butyrolactone is not lost by distillation and this may be done either by adding the butyrolactone after the greater amount of water, if any, formed during polymerization has been driven off, or, and preferably, by forming a precondensate of the butyrolactone with a part of the polyamideforming starting material and employing this precondensate in place of butyrolactone. Specification 495,790, [Group IV], is referred to.
