Abstract

1,150,725. Block copolyamides. COURTAULDS Ltd. 26 Aug., 1966 [27 May, 1965], No. 22535/65. Heading C3R. Block copolyamides are produced by reacting a polyamide oligomer having amino end-groups and a M.W. between 1000 and 6000 with (a) a polyfunctional activator in such an amount that for every terminal amino-group in the oligomer there are at least 1À2 functional groups in the activator present and (b) a lactam of formula where n is at least 5, containing an anionic polymerization catalyst. The polyfunctional activator is defined as a compound containing at least 2 functional groups which (i) activate anionic lactam polymerization and (ii) react with primary or secondary amino groups. Compounds specified include diisocyanates and N,N<SP>1</SP>-diacyl bislactams structurally derived from a dicarboxylic acid and a lactam. The oligomer may be a random copolymer. The oligomer may first be reacted with 2 equivalents of the polyfunctional activator followed by reaction with the lactam at 160-200‹ C. In an example a nylon 6/66 oligomer is treated with N,N<SP>1</SP>-terephthalyl biscaprolactam followed by Na in caprolactam. The product is shredded, soaked in glacial acetic acid and extracted with boiling methanol to remove low molecular weight material.
