A synthetic fibre-forming polyamide (P) consists essentially of: (A) 1-50% moles (a) -NH-(CH 2 ) x -CO-; (B) 1-40% moles (b) -NH-(CH 2 ) m -NH-CO-(CH 2 ) n -CO-; and (C) 30-60% moles (c) where x is 3-12, m is 4-12, and n is 2-10. Preferably x is 5, m is 6, and n is 4. In (c) the -CO- groups are preferably in the meta- or para-positions, (a) may be introduced in the form of an amino-acid or lactam, and (b) and (c) as the diamines and dicarboxylic acids, or as diammonium salts formed therefrom or as their polyamide-forming derivatives, e.g. amides, esters, acid halides, carbamates, or N-formyl compounds. Many suitable starting materials are listed. The reaction may be performed at 180-300‹ C., until (P) has intrinsic viscosity #0À4 in meta-cresol. The reaction may be performed at atmospheric pressure, or above or below. Preferably O 2 is absent; e.g. an N 2 atmosphere may be employed. Reduced pressure may be employed in the last stages of the reaction to remove by-products. Fibres or filaments formed from (P) may be used in vehicle tyres. The filaments may be drawn after extrusion.
