Abstract

Polyamides are made by heating a mixture of substantially equimolecular proportions of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an aliphatic or araliphatic diamine at substantially atmospheric pressure, the aqueous vapours produced being fractionated so that p any diamine contained in the aqueous vapour is removed therefrom and returned to the reaction vessel. Specified diamines and dicarboxylic acids are hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, g -methylhexamethylene diamine, m- and p-xylene diamine, adipic, sebacic and azelaic acid. Up to 40% by weight of the aliphatic acid may be replaced by an aromatic acid, e.g. m- and p-phthalic acid. Modifying agents and additives which may be present in the reaction mixture include acetic acid, titanium dioxide, cadmium yellow, red iron oxide, phthalocyanines and carbon black. The examples describe the preparation of polyamides from:-(1) aqueous hexamethylene diammonium adipate and (2) aqueous hexamethylene diammonium sebacate.
