Abstract

A polyamide is made by condensing a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid, or a salt thereof, in the solid phase, at a temperature below the melting point of the initial materials, the intermediate condensation products and the end products respectively. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of an oxygen-free gas, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide or hydrogen chloride. In the examples: (1) the dry salt of adipic acid and hexamethylene diamine is heated at 190 DEG C. in a current of dry carbon dioxide; (2) the dry salt of sebacic acid and hexamethylene diamine is heated at 165 DEG C. and then at 180 DEG C. in a current of nitrogen containing hexamethylene diamine; (3) the dry salt of terephthalic acid and hexamethylene diamine is condensed at 260 DEG C. in a current of nitrogen; (4) a mixture of the salts of adipic acid and terephthalic acid with hexamethylene diamine is condensed at 190 DEG C. in a current of nitrogen.
