Abstract
Aliphatic nitriles or dinitriles are prepared from the corresponding mono- or dibasic acids or the amides by heating the starting material in liquid form on a heat transfer means to a temperature below the boiling-point, at the prevailing pressure, of the compound to be evaporated, and transferring the evaporated compound by means of a stream of ammonia gas to a reaction zone which is at 250-550 DEG C. and which contains a catalyst causing splitting off of water. The liquid starting material is used in as thin a layer as possible, e.g. by using a thin-layer evaporator as the heat transfer means. The ammonia gas may be used in admixture with water or an inert gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen, and may be at about the same temperature as the heat transfer means or up to the boiling-point of the liquid to be evaporated. Reduced pressure may be employed in the evaporation step.
