Abstract

Superpolyamides are made by heating an aqueous slurry containing from 60 to 95% by weight of a nylon salt of m-xylylene diamine and an aliphatic dibasic acid containing from 6 to 10 carbon to a temperature of from 390 DEG to 490 DEG F. under a steam pressure of from 40 to 150 pounds per square inch gauge, the pressure being maintained by removal of steam from the reaction mixture, to produce a low polymer having a reduced viscosity in the range of from 0,4 to 0,7 at 0,5% by weight concentration in m-cresol, and thereafter producing a high polymer by reducing the pressure to atmospheric or below to remove water, raising the temperature above the melting point of the low polymer and continuing the polymerization of the low polymer at a temperature of from 470 DEG to 540 DEG F. to produce a polymer having a reduced viscosity in the range of from 0,9 to 2,0 at 0,5% by weight concentration in m-cresol. The reactants may contain viscosity stabilizers, e.g. acetic acid, metaxylylene diacetate or excess of the dicarboxylic acid or diamine. Copolyamides may be formed by the inclusion with the reactants of hexamethylene diamine or additional acids. The examples describe the preparation of polyamides from m-xylylene diammonium adipate and m-xylylene diammonium azelate.
