Abstract

852,282. Disc brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 22, 1956 [May 11, 1955], No. 32064/56. Class 103 (1). In a spot-type disc brake in which brake application is effected by a single piston and cylinder arrangement mounted on one side only of the fixed housing, the centre of load application of the piston operating in the single pressure cylinder to the movable brake pad being spaced radially outwardly and arcuately away from the centre of area of the face of the pad to provide uniform wear. The brake pad 12 is so located relative to the centre of the piston that the latter point B is aft of the radial centre line of the pad by an amount x (assuming the direction of rotation of the disc to be as indicated in Fig. 1) and the centre of the piston is offset a radial distance b from the centre of area of the pad. The amount of set arcuately (X) is sub. stantially equal to the thickness of the brake pad (e) multiplied by the coefficient of friction between the pad and the disc (Á). Using polar co-ordinates the distance b may be determined.
