Abstract

850,934. Printing processes. KELLER, E. June 21, 1957 [Nov. 5, 1956], No. 19704/57. Class 100(2) A process for the production of aluminium foil plates which have a self-adhesive layer on the back is characterised in that an electrolytically oxidised aluminium foil strip which has been uniformly coated with a coloured layer is provided in those regions which are to appear coloured in the finished plate with a greasy substance serving as a protective layer, whereafter the aluminium strip is passed in succession through an etching bath for removing colour in the non-greased portions, through a washing bath, through a de-greasing bath with a mechanical cleaner to remove the greasy substance, through a subsequent cleaning bath and finally to a drying tunnel, after leaving which the strip has applied to it an adhesive foil and is finally wound on to a roll. The strip is provided with the greasy resist by printing on the strip with a printing plate having printing areas corresponding to the areas A-I and K-Q on the strip which it is desired to colour and which form the foil plates to be made. The strip is thus printed with the resist, e.g. greasy ink, continuously and the resulting roll mounted at one end of the etching, washing, de-greasing and drying apparatus. All the baths are provided with compressed air lines for forcing air through the baths and thus keeping them agitated. The mechanical cleaner comprises opposed horizontal surface brushes and in the subsequent cleaning bath an ultrasonic transmitter is included to complete the cleaning. The drying tunnel includes infra red radiators facing both sides of the strip and a fan mounted in the central part of the tunnel for drawing air from the atmosphere and conveying it to both ends of the tunnel.
