Abstract

1323956 Transferring designs G LEHMING and G KUPPERS 22 April 1971 [23 April 1970] 10739/71 Heading B6C A method of applying a picture to ceramic tiles comprises (a) using a transfer consisting of a support sheet coated with a separating layer and having the picture printed thereon in ceramic colours bound by a varnish coating, (b) spraying the rough glazed surface of a tile with a solvent for the varnish coating (c) applying the transfer to the tile so that the picture is transferred to the tile and (d) subsequently firing. The separating layer may be a water soluble substance e.g. polyglycol or a heat-meltable substance e.g. wax. In the former case, the support may be paper, in the latter a metal foil. The transfer may be large enough to decorate the edges as well as the surface. Apparatus for applying pictures to tiles 2 prior to firing comprises a conveyer 1, shown e.g. a belt or turntable, which carries the tiles beneath a spray 3 which applies the varnish solvent e.g. ethyl glycol acetate, to the upper surfaces of the tiles. Each tile is then conveyed to a stop 18 where a transfer 5 fed from a pile 4 with its picture side facing downwardly is applied to the tile surface. Pressure rollers 7 etc. cause the solvent to act on the varnish so that the varnish and colours penetrate into the tile. Heated water is applied by a spray 11 to soften the separating layer, excess water being removed by a pressure roller 12. Finally, the tile passes under a sponge roller 13 serving to strip the transfer support from the picture on the tile. If a meltable separating layer is employed, then the devices 11, 12, 13 are replaced by a source of heat to melt the wax and a fan to detach the support sheet. The source of heat and the fan may be one apparatus producing a current of hot air.
