Abstract

1,245,474. Ornamenting. K. A. PIGUR. 29 Aug., 1968 [30 Aug., 1967], No. 41193/68. Heading B6G. [Also in Division G2] Single- or multi-coloured line or half-toned original illustrations are produced by applying to the coloured surface of a non-porous, non- absorbent material having a surface coloured layer, a stencil or pattern formed of a water-, soluble coloured layer, and thereafter removing first the exposed portions of the surface coloured layer and then the water-soluble coloured layer forming the stencil or pattern using suitable selected solvents for the respective layers. In a modification of the above method, the surface coloured layer is coated with a light-sensitive layer which is rendered water-soluble by illumination, the light-sensitive layer being illuminated through a stencil, the non-illuminated part dissolved away using anon-aqueous developer, the parts of the surface-coloured layer so exposed removed and the remainder of the lightsensitive layer finally removed by washing with water. In the Examples: (1) a foil on which colour is applied as a thin layer is varnished with mastic gum. Shapes are drawn upon this layer in a different colour to the foil, e.g. with a drawing pen and water colour. After drying the water colour, the exposed portions of the coloured layer originally applied to the foil are dissolved away using a nitro-cellulose thinner, the water colour pattern is then washed off with water leaving the line drawing in the original foil colour; (2) the foil of (1) or a material coated with such a foil is directly coated over with a water colour with which is mixed up to 5% casin dye. The desired shape is scraped into this coloured layer with a wooden stylus. The colour of the foil exposed in the places from which the water-soluble layer has been scraped away is then dissolved away using nitro-cellulose thinner. After the complete removal of the original colour, water-soluble ink of a different colour is worked into the particular shape whereafter the coloured layer forming a stencil is washed off with water; (3) self-adhesive letters and/or other foil shapes are stuck on to the material of Example 2, and the entire surface is subsequently painted with mastic gum varnish. A water-soluble colour is spread over the whole surface, allowed to dry, the letters and/or foil shapes are lifted from the surface using an adhesive film. The exposed part of the layer of foil colouring can then be dissolved away with a nitro-cellulose thinner and the water-colour stencil washed off; (4) the foil of (1) is coated with a light-sensitive material which becomes water-soluble when exposed to light, the layer is illuminated and subsequently the non-illuminated places dissolved away by a non-aqueous developer. The colour on the foil on the exposed parts of the stencil so formed is dissolved away using nitro-cellulose, and the template then washed off with water. The use of a solution of colour containing dextrin or gum arabic as the water colour to form the pattern or stencil is disclosed. A lacquer-ink can be used as the coloured layer, or casein colours can also be employed which cannot be dissolved in water but with a dilute aqueous solution of ammonia.
