Abstract
752,374. Transfers. ROBERTS, W. March 28, 1955 [March 26, 1954], No. 8866/54. Class 100(2). A transfer comprises an absorbent transfer paper, e.g. a simplex paper, coated with a watersoluble adhesive such as gum or starch solution, an initially liquid base material such as collodion, mineral oil or vegetable oil, e.g. lithographic varnish, either clear or pigmented, applied by flooding or lithographic, letterpress or silk-screen printing to the coated surface, display matter printed by a lithographic, letterpress or silk-screen process on to the base material after the latter is solidified, and composed of or finished with a strong adhesive varnish, glass powder dusted on to the varnish while still wet, and a clear protective lacquer coating applied by flooding, spraying or a silk-screen process to the varnish and glass powder when the varnish has set. The glass powder may be in granular form of size 0.015-1 mm. mesh, or a mixture of sizes within said range, and of refractive index 1.529. Glass of two or more colours may be used, in which case all areas to be covered in each colour are printed simultaneously, dusted and dried, and the process repeated for each colour. The transfer is soaked in water, the transfer paper slipped off and the base applied to the article to be decorated and retained by the water-soluble adhesive. The article to be decorated may be a cycle or motor-car reflector, road sign, noticeboard, &c.
