Abstract

646,394. Printing on curved surfaces; offset processes. VALIELA, J. Dec. 12, 1947, No. 32859. [Class 100 (ii)] The convex, concave or other non-planar surfaces of ceramic and other articles are decorated by first printing by means of a silk screen a design on a flexible extensible sheet, e.g. rubber latex and then transferring the printed design to the surface by pressing the sheet into contact with the surface by air pressure. Apparatus for this purpose may comprise (1) a box 1 containing plastic material 2 into which the article 3 to be decorated is embedded ; (2) a tray-like device 5, 11 hinged at 4 to the support for the box 1 and including a perforated plate 6 with the flexible sheet 8 above it secured at the edges 9, and (3) a stencilcarrying frame 14 pivoted at 17 to the support. The frame 14 is first swung down on to the sheet 8 and colour applied to the stencil, and then the tray 5, 11 is turned to overlie the article 3 and secured by a lock 19. Air pressure is now applied to the sheet 8 through a connection 13 to effect the transfer. The space between the sheet 8 and the article may be exhausted in order to cause the pressure of the sheet on to the article. In a modified arrangement, the device 5, 11 fits on but is not hinged to the box 1.
