Apparatus for decorating articles of ware such as pottery comprises an inking station A including a screen stencil 2, mounted in a pivoted frame 3, and a rigid backing support 8; a loading station B including a reciprocable table 4 to which is pivotally attached the frame 7 of an elastic printing membrane 1 and which carries a support 6 for the article 5 to be decorated; and a printing station C including a convex resilient pad 10, e.g. of gelatine. In use, the membrane is first positioned over the support 8, the screen frame 3 is dropped down and ink is applied in the desired design to the upper surface of the membrane; the frame 3 is then removed to one side and the membrane frame 7 turned over above the article 5 which has been positioned on the support B at station 6; next the table 4 is moved with the article 5 and the membrane above it to the station C, where the pad 10 is moved down in order to press the membrane against the article and transfer the pattern thereto, after which the pad 10 is withdrawn and the table 4 returned to station B where frame 7 can be turned over to the inking support 8. The printed surface of article 5 can then be dusted with a drying powder from container 13. The membrane may be in the form of a roller blind, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), or it may be mounted in a frame (41) with side rollers (42) movable along guide channels (43) between inking and printing stations, Fig. 5 (not shown). The apparatus may include a rotary indexing table on which an article is movable between the various stations.
