Abstract

An apparatus suitable for printing on a sheet 28 of material comprises a stencil screen 23 supported by a frame 22 a convex perforated support 1 for the sheet 28, a sealing strip 10 of sponge rubber adapted to form a fluid-tight space between the screen 23 and the sheet 28 when the screen and sheet are brought into proximity with one another, and means to reduce the pressure between the screen and the sheet so that a colouring composition in the form of a heavy non-flowing printing ink 26 located on the pervious portions 25 of the screen is drawn therethrough on to the surface of the sheet 28. The sheets 28, which may be porous, is placed over the small holes 4 on the convex base 1 and is held in position by applying suction to a passageway 3. A liquid which is at least a partial solvent for the printing ink is then applied to the sheet, the screen is pivoted downwardly on its hinges, Fig. 1 (not shown), and air between the screen and the sheet is exhausted through holes 5, which are larger than the holes 4, and a passageway 6. The screen is provided with impervious regions 24 and if desired printing colours for use in multicolour printing may be separated on the screen by boundary walls of rubber or metal. The printed design may be over-printed using a different stencil. The screen is initially flat but is deformed into a curved configuration during printing.
