Abstract
850.782. Pit-props. BARKER, R. E. May 12, 1959 [Dec. 23, 1958], No. 41513/58. Class 20(2) A telescopic pit-prop has one of more collars 1 frictionally gripping the inner prop-member p to sustain the load. A wedge 7 and a block 9 act together to pull the portion 6 of one end of the collar through a slot 4 in the other end, to tighten it. A corner-piece 10, located by a lug 11 engaging the aperture 5 provides clamping substantially around the whole circumference of the prop-member. A lining 12, preferably of a copper-lead alloy increases the frictional grip. In another form of collar, (Fig. 4 not shown) an eccentric cam provides the wedging action. One of each type of collar is normally provided, the Fig. 1 type providing the initial tightening of the prop and the cam type a finer adjustment of yield pressure.
