[Class 20(ii)] In a telescopic mine prop the outer part 2 is provided with a clamping box in which a wedge exerts a clamping force on adjacent surfaces of outer and inner parts, the force being transmitted by means of a cam lever to other surfaces of these parts at an angle to the first mentioned surfaces. Inside the clamping box 3 the upper part 1 is clamped by means of wedges 4, 5. These wedges bear on their inner sides against clamping plates 6, 7 and on their outer sides against the ends of a cam lever 8. The clamping effect of the wedge 5 is sufficient to support the unloaded upper part 1 while the force exerted by the wedge 4 when multiplied by the cam lever 8, enables the prop to support heavy loads. If the wedge 4 is graduated the clamping force may be adjusted to a desired magnitude.
