Abstract

850,287. Suction rolls of paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Jan. 1, 1957 [Jan. 6, 1956], No. 80/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 96. The holes in the shell of a suction roll of a paper-making machine are so positioned that noise is minimized when the machine is running at normal speed, the holes being in a regularly-recurring pattern of rows, inclined slightly to an axial line on the roll, and generally circumferential columns. The holes are of a depth h of 1 to 4 inches and are spaced apart less than 3h - inches, while the peripheral spacing is such 2 that the sound caused by the two holes is 180 sh degrees out of phase, i.e. - inches, s being the 30c peripheral speed in feet per minute to produce noise cancellation, and c being the speed of sound in air in feet per second.
