Abstract

849,581. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. Feb. 17, 1959 [March 25, 1958], No. 5485/59. Class 123(1) A pressure-resisting closure for a vessel 10 comprises a flexible disc 15 having a peripheral sealing area 26 engaging on an upstanding annular flange 19 formed in the neck of the vessel. The neck is internally threaded to take a plug 13 having an internally projecting annular flange 14 of less diameter than the flange 19, the flange 14 bearing on the outer face of the disc. A gasket 17 is provided between the disc and the flange 19. Fig. 1 shows the initial stage in closing the vessel, the plug 13 having been tightened so that the disc bears lightly on the flange 19. A push rod 20 is then used to arch the flexible disc, Fig. 3, to seal its periphery on the flange 19 and the plug is tightened to bring its flange 14 firmly against the outer face of the disc. On releasing the push rod, Fig. 4, the disc moves back exerting a constant sealing pressure on the flange 19, the flange 14 acting as a fulcrum. Internal pressure in the container increases the sealing pressure of the disc. In a modification the push rod is fixed to the centre of the disc.
