Abstract

836,153. Joint-making packing. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. July 9, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 21747/57. Class 122 (3). [Also in Group XVIII] An open-ended pressure vessel body 22, Fig. 2, has a closure 23 registering with the body opening, and a resilient metallic ring gasket 27 which is so shaped and disposed in relation to the coacting surfaces of the body and closure that, when sealing pressure is applied, the gasket is subjected to a twisting moment not exceeding its elastic limit, so that on the release of the sealing pressure the gasket returns to its original unstressed condition. The generally triangular cross-section of the gasket 27 is such that the top face 27A makes an angle A with the face 23C of the closure member and the inclined face 27C makes an angle B with the conical surface 26 of the mouth of the pressure vessel. During the application of pressure to the closure member 23, as by tightening bolts arranged circumferentially around the top edge of the vessel, the gasket is twisted in the direction P, Fig. 2, so that its top face 27A makes contact with the face 23C of the closure member and its toe 28 is wedged between the cylindrical projecting portion 23B of the closure member and the conical face 26. The included angle A may be formed by suitably shaping the top face 27A of the gasket, the face 23C of the closure member, or both such faces. In a modification, an inverted form of closure member 56, Fig. 7, is provided so that the pressure to be sealed is used to augment the pressure applied to the gasket 59 by the tightening of the bolts 54 to force the conical face 57 of the closure member into sealing engagement with the face 59C of the gasket and its top face 59A bearing tightly against the underside of a ring 58 interposed between the gasket and a ring 51 screw-threaded into the opening of the vessel 52. Under sealing pressure, the ring is twisted in the direction R and the toe 60 is wedged between the cylindrical wall of the body of the pressure vessel and the conical face 57 of the closure member 56.
