Abstract

825,222. Cylinder heads: sparking plugs. WHITEHOUSE Ltd., B. J. July 29, 1957 [July 2, 1956], No. 20393/56. Classes 7(2) and 7(4) [Also in Group XXVIII] A fluid seal for a sparking plug or cylinder head comprises two sealing surfaces of curved cross-section, one surface being convex and having a radius of curvature substantially less than that of the other and concave surface, the two surfaces being adapted to co-operate so as to form a seal along one or more distinct lines of contact therebetween. As shown, pipes each have, respectively, formed therein an annular concave groove 3 of part-circular cross-section and an annular ridge 5 substantially rectangular in cross-section and provided with two convex sealing surfaces 4 the radii of the latter being less than the radius of curvature of the groove. The width of the ridge is less than the width of the groove, but where the cross-section of the groove is less than a semicircle, the width of the ridge is equal to or slightly greater than the width of the groove. The depth of the groove is equal to two-thirds of the radius of curvature thereof, and the radius of the surfaces 4 is substantially equal to one half of the radius of curvature of the groove. The sealing surfaces are such that the direction of the force exerted thereby on each other lies along a line joining the centres of curvature thereof and is at an angle of about 45 degrees to the direction of the seal tightening force exerted by a nut clamping the pipes together. In a modification, the groove 3, Fig. 2, is provided in an annular projection 6 and the ridge 5 is arranged within a groove 7 into which the projection 6 keys loosely. The seal may be formed from brass, aluminium, iron, light alloy metal, or synthetic resin, and may have a single line contact.
