Abstract

848,971. Textile twist-tubes. SMITH, J.F. April 4, 1957 [April 4, 1956], No. 10997/57. Class 120(2). [Also in Group XXXIV] A high-speed twist-apparatus for false-twisting a linearly-travelling yarn, comprises at least two supporting-members mounted for rotation in speed relation to each other and a continuouswalled twist-tube freely suspended by and rotatable between them, yarn guide-means positioned in the path of the yarn carried by the tube, one of the supporting-members having means for driving the tube whereby the angular velocities of the tube and member vary inversely as their respective radii. In Fig. 1, the tube 46 is carried by three belts 51-53 around pulleys 31, 43, 44, the pulley 31 being carried by a shaft in bearings 25, 26 and rotated by a belt 23. The idler pulleys 43, 44 are carried by a shaft the bearings of which are carried by an eccentrically-bored sleeve-member clamped in a housing by screws 39; the position of the eccentric can be varied by a lever to tighten the belts 52, 53. The twist-tube can have crowned rings 47, 49 which may have flanges. In Fig. 4, the tube is supported directly by three pulleys one of which is driven and carried by a pivoted arm 77 urged by a spring into contact with the tube. The two idler pulleys may have rings of rubber co-operating with grooves in the spindle. The bearings of the various pulley-shafts are held in their seatings by resilient split-rings of polygonal shape with a large number of flats, which rings are disposed in circumferential grooves in the seatings. The spindle is provided at the top or bottom with a detachable housing for a roller guide 56 which may be offset from the spindle-axis and around which the yarn is wrapped once or twice: alternatively, two rollers 114, 115, Fig. 7, may be mounted on oppositely-inclined shafts on opposite sides of the central axis of the tube so that the yarn reaches the lower roller and leaves the top roller tangentially along aligned paths. The rollers may be replaced by non-rotational tubular or other elements and both may be offset on the same side of the spindle axis for the yarn to be wound around each element in the same direction.
