[Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXII] An electrically driven compressor has a freely oscillating armature and piston assembly mounted within the compressor housing by resilient elements spaced portions of which make solid contact with each other when the piston has reached the position of maximum stroke and so limit the travel of the piston. U- shaped laminations 4 contain a coil 5 connected in series with a rectifier to a single-phase mains to be acted upon by a half-wave train which causes it to be magnetised periodically. Laminations 7 forming magnetic yokes have a recess accommodating the armature 9. The armature is rigidly connected to the piston 8 inside which are springs 15, 16 resting on a collar 18 on a bolt 17 secured to a flexible plate 20. When current is supplied to coil 5 the armature 9 is attracted and the piston makes a compression stroke (see Group XXVIII). The characteristics of the springs being such that they have a braking effect which increases at an increasing rate before the piston reaches the end of its travel. The suction stroke is effected by the springs and these provide the only forces acting in the intervals between the half-cycles of the magnetising current. Other arrangements of springs than that shown in Fig. 1 may be employed and various forms of spring are described (see Group XXXII). Specification 848,889 is referred to.
