Abstract
1,099,223. Reciprocating electric motors. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1965 [Sept. 4, 1964], No. 36451/64. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F1] In a two-stage reciprocating piston compressor having first and second stage pistons 19, 20 slidable in respective cylinders 5, 6, each piston is provided with a tubular extension 21 surrounded by a magnet 28 and each has a coil 31 or 32 whereby when alternating current is supplied either to the magnets 28 or to the coils 31, 32 or to both, the pistons are reciprocated against the action of a coiled return spring 26 secured at one end to the extension 21 and at the other end to a barrier plate 23. The magnets 28 may be energized by A.C. or D.C. or may be permanent. Similarly, the coils 31, 32 may be energized by A.C. or D.C. The two stages are separated by the barrier plate 23 to which the flanges 25 of a pair of polepieces 24 are secured. Each polepiece 24 extends axially through an aperture 4 formed in a respective end plate 3 to form an annular gap for one of the coils 31 or 32. The leads 33 to the coils are wound round the turns of the springs 26 and pass out of the compressor through bores 35 in the barrier plate 23. The plate 23 may be omitted whereby a single spring may replace the two springs 26.
