Abstract
1,115,720. Reciprocating dynamo-electric machines. M. BARTHALON. 2 Nov., 1966 [17 Nov., 1965], No. 49059/66. Heading H2A. In an electromagnetic reciprocating compressor, the armature consists of a cylindrical magnetic plunger which is drawn intermittently into a radial field and is directly coupled to the piston. As shown in Fig. 1, its simplest form, the armature 4 works in the annular air-gap between poles la, 2 which are preferably of sintered material and are energized by coil 3 fed with half-waves through diode 3c. The armature is also of sintered material to reduce eddy-currents, and it works against an aircushion formed under piston-head 6. Cooling air is drawn by the underside of the piston through holes 17, 18 which align at the extremity of the return stroke, and is then pumped along channels 20 in the centre pole to the air space 22 round the working coil 3, the remaining air acting as return cushion. It is described how two such armatures may be used, one on each aide of the core (Fig. 3, not shown). The armature may be composed of annular laminae and be spring-returned. The armature has lubricating strips of P.T.F.E. between the laminµ. In an alternative arrangement. Fig. 4, a pair of armatures 56a, 56b are connected to a single, double-acting piston 61, one on each side. Each works in an annular field core as described. The piston has a radially projecting flange 62 serving to pump cooling air round the field coils from ventilation volumes 60a, 60b, through suction valves 64 (see Fig. 9, not shown) and through cooling passages, not shown, round the coils. In addition, air entering at ports 68a, 68b is compressed and delivered at valves 65a, 65b, in the central poles. It is described how the principle of the invention is applied to a free-piston I.C. engine, the armature reciprocating between concentric arrays of radial, wound poles. The armature acts as an inductor, modulating the flux to generate in a coil on a common return path.
