Abstract
1,152,209. Reciprocating electric motors. M. BARTHALON. 8 Sept., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 40181/66. Heading H2A. A reciprocating electric motor fed with D.C. impulses has an unwound armature moving transversely to the working flux and resiliently biased out of the working gap. The motor is especially suitable for a pump but has numerous other applications. As shown in Fig. 1, a singleacting pump piston 21 is operated by an armature 18 made up of plates of iron 22 spaced by insulation 22a to ensure saturation of the armature and linearity of performance. The armature slides between facings 61, 62 of P.T.F.E. In the form shown, the flux is generated by a single coil 6 fed from an interrupter 7 and rectifier 9 (see also Fig. 5, not shown). The device is regulated by a variable resistance. The armature is biased by spring 31 and returned by a vacuum space 16 and compression volume 16a. By using two air-gaps and one or two armatures, the motor may be made doubleacting. Various arrangements of thyratrons are described for generating the energizing impulses (Figs. 6, 7, 8, not shown). In the modification shown in Fig. 10, two coils 35 are employed and the armature laminations 53 are of graded thickness and aligned with the direction of motion. Cooling air is circulated through grooves 91 and a slot in the piston-rod 54. In a further modification (Figs. 12-15, not shown), the piston-rod acts through a hole in the stator yoke and the armature slides on guides. In yet another modification (Figs. 19, 20, not shown), the piston itself is long enough to act as support and guide for the armature which is secured to it and is also cylindrical.
