Abstract

1392689 Dynamo-electric machines F R SHERIDAN 3 Oct 1973 46129/73 Heading H2A [Also in Division F1] An actuator comprises linearly displaceable drive and driven permanent magnets 44, 30, Fig. 2, the drive magnet 44 being reciprocated along a linear path by a drive source 52, e.g. an electric motor, the driven magnet 30 being moved linearly by the drive magnet 44 during the working stroke of the actuator and then being returned to its initial position, e.g. by spring 40, when the drive magnet is moved in the reverse direction by drive source 52. In the embodiment shown, a rod 42 connected to driven magnet 30 forms a reciprocating output member. In a second embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the driven magnet (12) is connected to a flywheel (24) which forms the output member, the inertia of the flywheel then returning the driven magnet to its initial position prior to the next working stroke. In a third embodiment, Fig. 3, the driven magnet 60 is mounted inside a stationary chamber 90 and forms the piston of a pump. The drive magnet 86 is reciprocated by an electric motor 76 and is mechanically coupled to a third magnet 92 so that when the drive magnet is moved away from chamber 90, the third magnet is moved towards the chamber and so moves the driven magnet 60 back to its initial position ready for the next working stroke of the actuator.
