Abstract
550,249. Reciprocating motors. HITCHCOCK, S. I. May 22, 1941, No. 6598. [Class 35] A reciprocating electric motor has a moving magnet armature, comprising a rectangular horizontally polarized permanent magnet 1 and laminated pole-pieces 2, which slide between energized magnets 13, and drives a crank-shaft 8 through rod 11 and link 10. The crankshaft carries a cam-operated make-andbreak switch of the kind described in Specification 547,668 which reverses the current to energizing coils 14 at or near the end of each stroke, so that each magnet 13 alternately attracts and repels the armature. The magnet 1 is surrounded by a non-magnet sheath 12 and carries members 3 which slide in grooves 4 in the frame. The armature may comprise a number of magnets which may be of horse-shoe shape arranged back-to-back. According to the Provisional Specification the permanent magnets may be stationary and the make-and-break switch may merely cut off the current to those coils 14 from which the armature is receding.
