Abstract

[Also in Group XXVI] A pump or compressor, e.g. for a refrigerator, is driven by a cylindrical, polarized armature which oscillates between alternating electromagnetic poles. The natural frequency of oscillation on no load is slightly below the energizing frequency and is controlled by an elastic member attached to the armature. As shown in Fig. 1, this consists of a spiral spring 31, and the armature 22 includes two permanent magnets 23, 24 arranged with unlike poles adjacent. The magnets have pole tips 25 wider than the gaps between the limbs of E-shaped laminated electromagnets 5, 6 so that in the rest position the electromagnets act as keepers. When the windings 16, 16a are energized with A.C. the resultant oscillations of the armature are transmitted to a piston 39 which operates in an arcuate cylinder 42. This is separated from a chamber 41a by a flexible cup valve 43. The whole device, on a moulded base 1, is suspended from an outer case 9 by springs 7. In an alternative arrangement, two or four pistons may be provided, the spiral spring may be replaced by a central torsion member passing through a hollow armature shaft, and the electromagnetic field may be of an eight-pole construction, in which case the armature has four permanent magnets. As shown in Fig. 5, alternate field poles carry windings, but alternatively every pole may be wound.
