Abstract

A scouring cleanser comprises a major proportion by weight of a water-insoluble abrasive such as silica, feldspar, pumice, volcanic ash, diatomaceous earth, bentonite or talc, and a minor proportion of a watersoluble mixture which comprises (a) at least 5% by weight of a water-soluble ionic organic surface active agent, (b) di- or tri-chlorocyanuric acid, preferably the latter and (c) as a stabilizer for (b), a non-terpenic olefin in which one of the carbon atoms of the double bond is tertiary in character. (a) may be soap, an alkylaryl sulphonate, an alkyl sulphate, a fatty acid monoglyceride sulphate, or sodium toluene, xylene, or naphthalene sulphonate. (c) is generally present in an amount of 5-40% by weight of (b) and may be tetraisobutylene, propylene tetramer, or more preferably 5-4-nonene. Adjuvants such as sodium sulphate, bisulphate, chloride and silicate, alkali metal phosphates and polyphosphates, magnesium sulphate and silicate, calcium chloride, citric, tartaric and sulphamic acids, and ethylene diamine tetracetic acid and its salts may also be incorporated. Such adjuvants are generally present in amounts 100-1000 times the weight of polychlorocyanuric acid present. The composition may be prepared by dispersing the olefin in gaseous or, more preferably, liquid form and then mixing the olefin in such form with a gaseous, liquid, or solid carrier, suitably the abrasive, the ionic surface active agent, or adjuvant salts, the polychlorocyanuric acid being added only subsequently. Alternatively, the polychlorocyanuric acid-containing composition may be tumbled and sprayed with a liquid or liquefied olefin, or an olefin in liquid form may be slurried with an inert solid diluent and the slurry then thoroughly dispersed throughout a dry inert solid diluent, the polychlorocyanuric acid being added last. The final composition is desirably packed in moisture-impermeable material, e.g. glass, metal, or metal foil.
