Abstract

An aqueous detergent composition comprising (a) a non-acidic alkali metal salt of a phosphoric acid having a molecular weight below 400, (b) an aniomic detergent, and (c) a fatty acid alkanolamide, contains a finely divided water-insoluble abrasive material in stable suspension. The phosphate (a), which comprises 2-45% of the liquid medium, is preferably sodium or potassium pyrophosphate or tripolyphosphate. The detergent (b) is preferably a mixture of soap with an alkylaryl sulphonate such as sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate, an alkly sulphate, or an acylaminoalkane sulphonate, but acyl isethionates are not recommended the weight ratios of synthetic detergent to soap should be 1:1 to 4:1. In general, component (b) should comprise 1-10% of the liquid medium, but if no soap is present, the synthetic detergent should not be less than 3%, and if no synthetic detergent is included, the soap should not be less than 1,2%. Although component (c) may consist of an isopropanolamide, a glycerolamide or a tris-(hydroxymethyl)-methylamide, it is preferred to use the mono- and di-ethanolamides of lauric acid in amounts of 1-10% of the liquid medium. The abrasive may consist of felspar, pumice, kieselguhr, emery, or carborundum, but is preferably silica, and is suitably of such a particle size that it all passes a sieve of 104 micron mesh and 80% at least passes a sieve of 53 micron mesh coarser abrasive particles may however be used for special purposes. In general the abrasive constitutes 20-50% of the total composition. The compositions, which may also include sodium carbonate, bicarbonate and sulphate, borax, germicides such as p-chloro-m-cresol and bis- (3:5:6-trichloro-2-hydroxyphenyl)-methane perfume, such as pine oil, and colour, should not contain any hydrotrope such as sodium xylene sulphonate. The ionic components present may be used in the form of the alkali metal, ammonium, or substituted ammonium salts. The compositions are prepared by heating and stirring the phosphate with twice the weight of water to 60 DEG C., cooling to 40 DEG C., adding the solution obtained by dissolving the detergent in the rest of the water at 60 DEG C., cooling to 40 DEG C., and then adding successively the alkanolamide, the abrasive, and any other ingredients. In the Provisional Specification no limit is imposed on the molecular weight of the phosphate (a), and the alkanolamide (c) may be replaced by any non-ionic surface active agent, several of which are specified.
