Abstract

A hydrocarbon fuel for use in aviation gas turbines, boiling in the range 100 DEG to 600 DEG F., contains at least 0.1% by weight of naphthenic acids and less than 0.4% by weight of total sulphur. A fraction derived from a naphthenic crude oil is treated with caustic soda solution to extract mercaptans to below 0.001% by weight of the fraction, the naphthenic acids are recovered by neutralizing the extract with hydrochloric acid and extracting with petroleum ether, and the recovered naphthenic acid are incorporated in the fuel in an amount between 0.1 and 0.3% by weight.
