Abstract

An electrically conducting layer is formed on a predetermined area by providing a mask defining said area, causing a substance capable of forming the conducting layer to become deposited, e.g. by spraying, on said area, and directing a current of gas, e.g. air, to oppose leakage of the substance around the edge of the mask. The surface to be coated may be the end wall of a tubular envelope, e.g. a window of an electronic device having a metal ring sealed between the window and the envelope, in which case the mask is also tubular and of such diameter as to expose the window and the inner edge of the metal ring. The current of gas is then caused to flow between the mask and the envelope. The mask may be of metal or asbestos. The substance sprayed may be an aqueous solution of stannic chloride, containing hydrochloric acid, in which case the surface to be coated is heated, e.g. in an oven, before spraying.
