Abstract
Gas getter device, consisting of an open metal container for a powdered mixt. of Ni and an alloy of Al with an alkaline earth metal, viz. Ba, Sr, Ca, or Mg, where the alkaline earth metal can be evaporated by heating. The getter, complete with its container, is coated with a layer of silica. The coated getter is pref. placed inside glass parts which are then assembled at high temp. to make a picture tube for colour television. The tube is then evacuated, and the alkaline earth metal evaporated to form a deposit on the internal surface of the tube. The layer of silica is pref. obtd. by covering the container and getter with a hydrolysed organic silicate, esp. ethyl silicate, followed by heating. The getter functions satisfactorily even after exposure to a moist atmos. at 450 degrees C., e.g. for 1 hr. which is typical of assembly conditions for colour television tubes.
