845,260. Stuffing-box substitutes. FRENKEL, M. S. June 20, 1956 [June 22, 1955], No. 1322/60. Divided out of 842,692. Class 122 (5). A sealing gland for relatively rotatable parts, for example a rotary member 10 and a non- rotary member 11, comprises a helical thread 13 in one member surrounded by a helical thread 14 of opposite hand in the other member, the groove cross-sectional area of the threads complementarily varying from a maximum at one end of the gland to zero at the other end and the thread 13 on the rotary member having a maximum groove cross-sectional area at the lowpressure end 19 of the gland and being so handed that when rotating in the normal direction it pumps fluid from the low-pressure end to the high-pressure end 18. The interface 17 between the lands of the threads is conical. Two opposite glands according to the invention may be provided.
