845,148. Friction clutches; gearing for stopping and starting machinery. NSU WERKE A.G. April 18, 1958 [April 26, 1957], No. 12385/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXVII] The crank-shaft 1 of an air-cooled internal combustion engine carries a driving clutchplate 7 engaged by a driven clutch disc 5 mounted upon the sleeve-like hub of an output pinion 2 spatially positioned between the clutch housing 20 and the engine crankcase. The clutch is engaged by springs 16 acting on a pressure-plate 4 and is disengaged by operation of a chain (not shown) connected to a lever 15 which turns a threaded shaft 14 in the clutch housing, thus withdrawing a cup-shaped connector 12 having a peripheral flange engaging the inner ends of radial throw-out levers 11 pivoting on studs 10, the outer ends of the throw-out levers abutting pins 9 fast with the clutch pressure-plate. The driving clutchplate 7 carries a fan 21 with blades 22 which draw in air through passages 23 and pump it through a spiral passage 24 to cool the engine.
