Abstract

[Also in Division F1] In a variable-speed drive for the auxiliary items of an internal combustion engine the cooling fan 12 is driven by the crank-shaft 10 through expanding-pulley gearing 11 and drives a multigroove pulley 13 connected to the other items by belts, the gearing 11 being arranged to effect, by centrifugal control, an upward speed change as the crank-shaft speed falls to a low value, and conversely. The gear consists of fixed cone discs 20, 35 and movable discs 25, 42 loaded by springs 29, 40 respectively, the disc 25 being integral with a casing 23 while the disc 35 is integral with pulley 13. Casing 23 houses a fixed piston 21, the space 50 between the members being filled with liquid, the centrifugal head generated in which displaces casing 23 and disc 25 to vary the ratio of gear 11 in accordance with the speed of crankshaft 10. In a first modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the piston (43) is a sheet-metal pressing incorporating a peripheral bellows seal (44), while in a second modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), centrifugal control is effected by pivoted weights (59) mounted within pulley 13 and varying the axial spacing of the associated core discs.
