Abstract

844,853. Actuation of switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 22, 1957 [May 25, 1956], No. 16233/56. Class 38 (5). A protective relay device has a casing 10 arranged for connection to an oil-filled electrical apparatus, e.g. a transformer, a float-operated switch with contacts 21, 22 immersed in the oil within the casing and partition means 26 to maintain the contacts immersed in oil independently of the general oil level within the casing. In the arrangement shown, solid nylon floats 13, 14 are mounted on pivots 15, 16. The upper float 13 is counterbalanced by a weight 18 and carries a mercury switch 17 which may be arranged to complete an alarm circuit when the oil level in the casing falls sufficiently for the float 13 to turn about its pivot into the position shown. The lower float 14 is counterbalanced by a weight 23 and carries spring-loaded bridging contacts 21 which engage fixed contacts 22 mounted in an oil container 26, when the general oil level falls sufficiently or when oil displaced from the apparatus surges through an aperture 29 in a baffle 28 on to the weight 23 or on to deflection vanes fixed to the weight. The closing of the contacts 21, 22 may complete a tripping circuit for a circuit-breaker controlling the apparatus. The device is stated to be particularly suitable for use on electric traction vehicles.
