Abstract

710,004. Actuation of switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 29, 1952 [Aug 31, 1951], No. 20610/51. Class 38(5) A protective relay device responsive to the oil level in an oil system of a transformer or other oil-filled apparatus, comprises a cup 2 counterbalanced on a pivot 4 by a weight 6 such that normally when casing 1 is filled with oil the cup is immersed and its buoyancy causes the weight 6 to abut a stop 18. Inlet. 17 is connected to the top of the transformer and outlet 22 to a conservator tank, whereby gas liberated due to a transformer fault collects in the top of casing 1 and the oil level drops causing the oil-filled cup 2 to rock about pivot 4, and a mercury switch 8 carried by the cup to complete an alarm circuit, the weight 6 then abutting a stop 19. Another similar cup 3 may be provided so that if the oil level drops still further a mercury switch 9 is tilted to close the tripping circuit of a breaker supplying the transformer. A baffle 14 having an aperture 15 adjustable by a plate 16 causes a sudden rush of oil produced by a serious fault to deflect the balance weight 7 of the cup 3 and operate the switch 9.
