Abstract

747,514. Oil-break switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 11, 1955 [Feb. 12, 1954], No. 4207/54. Class 38(5) The tank of an oil-filled circuit-breaker is divided into a number of compartments, each containing oil-immersed apparatus, and is provided with valves whereby oil may be transferred between the compartments or between the compartments and at least one further compartment. The tank may comprise a cylindrical casing 1 divided into two parts by a member 1b. The upper part of the tank is divided vertically by two curved barriers into three compartments each containing a contact structure 2. Each of the upper compartments is connected by a pipe 5 to a four-way valve 6 connected with a pipe 7. A further four-way valve 8 connects the pipe 7 with a pump connection 10, an outlet 11 to the lower compartment, or a normally sealed port. Oil may be drained from one of the upper compartments into the lower compartment to permit inspection of the contacts and then replaced by operation of pump 12, or may be drained out through the normally sealed port to a purifying apparatus and thence through port 14 to the lower compartment before being pumped back into the upper compartment from whence it came.
