Abstract

Thorium is alloyed with magnesium or magnesium-base alloys by mixing with the molten metal or alloy pellets made from a mixture of 10-50 parts by weight of magnesium or magnesium-base alloy powder and 100 parts of thorium fluoride powder. The mixture may contain up to 20% by weight of one or more of the following metals or fluorides of these metals: zirconium, zinc, manganese, base earth metals, silver, indium, beryllium. Before addition to melt the pellets may be heated in an inert atmosphere to effect reaction between the magnesium and thorium fluoride and give the pellets the following composition by weight:- p .Thorium.44-63% .Magnesium fluoride.23-33% .Thorium fluoride.0-33% .Magnesium.0-23% Specifications 652,224, 652,226, 652,227 and 667,405 are referred to.
